Day 134: Datalicious

I got my Christmas present a little early - a power meter (that's the device in my hand, the iBike iPro) to complement all the other data I collect with my Polar heart rate monitor.

First impressions? Out of the box it feels big and plasticky, but when you stick it on the bike it's amazing how much information such a small device detects, calculates and displays (power, wind speed, hill slope, plus all the usual expected stuff etc). I'll give it it's first full test tomorrow.

DESCRIPTION: Wikipedia

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is a 2003 romantic comedy film.
The film was directed by Donald Petrie and stars Kate Hudson
and Matthew McConaughey. It is based on a short cartoon book
of the same name by Michele Alexander and Jeannie Long.

PLOT

The film tells the story of a journalist, Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson),
who works for a magazine called Composure as the "How to..." woman.
She's bored and wishes she could write more about important things,
such as politics, economics, religion, poverty, and so on. She soon
finds herself writing an article called "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days."

Andie tells her boss that, to write more freely and creatively, she'll
date a man and do all the wrong things women tend to do in
relationships, and record her experiences for the article.

At the same time, advertising executive Benjamin Barry
(Matthew McConaughey) tells his boss that he can make
any woman fall in love with him in just ten days. To prove it,
he'll find a woman and bring her to the upcoming company
ball as his date. If he succeeds, he gets to be in charge of
the advertising for the new diamond company account
otherwise headed by his boss.

Ben's rival co-workers, Judy and Judy, who were at
Composure Magazine earlier and are aware of Andie's
new assignment, conspire to have Andie and Ben meet
that night and start their quests. Neither Andie nor Ben
reveal their true intentions. Andie puts Ben through
various experiences to make him quickly break up
with her, but Ben sticks around in to make her fall
in love with him. Andie acts in a possessive way,
interferes with Ben's Poker night, and takes him
to a Celine Dion concert instead of a New York
Knicks basketball game. Ben stays with her
despite everything and both reveal their true
motives at the end, but their initial desires
have changed.

REJOINDER:

I personally found an emotional enclave as I watched this movie
as a reply to my queries about the male psyche. Men desire women
but they will never abandon their freedom. But some pursue marital
bond as an answer to their desire for stability...only to separate if time
has proven that the relationship could not go on.

Some stay married because of responsibility. This confuses me.
Why men want to own but does not want to be owned? Why lovers
submit to each other but they still change as time goes by.

My answer is just like yours, for nothing is static and everything
will not stay in its original state forever.

With his wife screaming from a balcony on high at her husband on the street below. Then only one option remains. So as I watched, off he goes to his 4wd and gets a gun out of the back and takes pot shots at her on the balcony. Then returns to car for more ammo whereupon she appears again during the reload time, screaming more abuse before ducking for cover again. This cycle was repeated a few times before he got into his jeep and drove off.

A Merchant At Rest in the Rowland Cemetery In Caldwell County, Kentucky

A Merchant At Rest in the Rowland Cemetery In Caldwell County, Kentucky

This is a photograph that I took of the headstone marking the grave of my great-great-great grandfather, Patrick Henry Calhoun Brown in the Rowland Cemetery in rural Caldwell County, Kentucky. He was known by his friends and neighbors as “Coon,” which was a take on his middle name, Calhoun.

Coon was born June 18, 1836 in Caldwell County, Kentucky to Leonard L. Brown and Sarah Cartwright Brown. His mother was the daughter of Justinian Carl Cartwright, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War.

He married Jane Guess, my great-great-great grandmother, in Caldwell County in 1856. She was the daughter of James Guess and Celia Stewart Guess. Coon and Jane were the parents of five children: James, Henry, Robert, Idona, and Mary Alfaleen. Mary was the youngest child and was my great-great grandmother.

In the 1860 Federal Census for Caldwell County, Kentucky, Coon was listed as residing in the rural community of Enon with his wife and two young sons. The fact that he was married with two young children is why Coon was able to avoid military service during the United States Civil War which began in 1861.

Coon Brown owned and operated a general store in the Enon community for many years. He was also a founding member of the nearby Walnut Grove Baptist Church in 1876 and served as a deacon there until his death. This church is still in existence today. During his lifetime, Coon was regarded throughout the community as being a fervently religious man who attended church every time the church doors opened. He was also known for his long winded, almost never ending prayers during which he sweated profusely.

Early one Sunday morning, the Brown family readied themselves for the Sunday services at the Walnut Grove Baptist Church. Coon’s son, Robert, was a prankster at heart and sought to provide himself and his siblings with some much need humor. He took a deck of playing cards, wrapped them carefully in Coon’s handkerchief, and then returned them to his father’s suit coat.

Just as always, Coon was called upon by the church pastor to pray. Coon stood to his feet and began his long and winding message to God. As he did so, drops of sweat began to roll down his forehead. Robert and his siblings watched anxiously from the corners of their eyes as their heads were bowed. Coon reached into his pocket, pulled out his handkerchief, and proceeded to spill 52 cards all over the floor as he spoke with God. In those days, a deck of cards was considered to be a pack of “52 demons” that were taken out and played by ungodly sinners. It can be assured that the ensuing aftermath was unpleasant for Coon and even more unpleasant for his children when they returned home that day!

Jane died in Caldwell County on August 19, 1896. Coon remained a widower until he married Lizzie McQuigg on July 17, 1902 in the town of Eddyville, Kentucky. On their wedding day, he was 66 years old and she was 25. They had one child, Clifton, who was born in 1903. Clifton died three years later after his bedclothes caught on fire while he played near the fireplace.

Coon died at his home in the Enon community on April 3, 1911 at the age of 74. His funeral was held at the Walnut Grove Baptist Church and was heavily attended by members of the community. He was buried beside Jane and his son Clifton.

Luddite, i am not. Technology is my friend. i love my sewing machine, kitchen aid mixer and washing machine like the rest of the world. But, I think that i am being misunderstood lately. Especially what i am doing by not being a consumer for a year. (it could be more) I want to use what we have, not waste our earths precious resources (we have used 30 percent in the last three decades), refashion my clothes and grandma's that i inherited, make things for my family, not kill trees, live on natures bounty. i am not moving backwards in time, i am moving forwards. i am not leeching myself and praying to be healed, i am not sick or crazy, i just care.

A friend asked me yesterday at a lunch party (and I am grossly paragraphing this as I was on my third glass of wine) why I live like I am in a 3rd world country. The answer is, I don’t. We are literate (we read a lot of books instead of watching tv), we are not over populated and suffering (we have housing), we are not forced to work in sweat shops by big capitalist corporations, we have the best health care in the world (according to the WHO) and it’s free (our taxes pay for it), we have an abundance of fresh, wonderful food, I could go on and on but you get my point. Just because we use cotton cloths instead of toilet paper and we don’t buy stuff, doesn’t make me a freak does it?

Or does it; hi my name is Riana and I have not bought anything except for food for four and half months. I am a recovering shopping shoe/jacket/handbag addict. I gave away half of my closets, but there is still more to be given away. In my not shopping, I have become more creative, more joyful and more satisfied. I realize finally that I have an individual responsibility to make my world a better place to live, but I don’t preach this to people. I blog about it, I make it part of our life everyday, but I don’t force my rules on anyone else. As much as I would love to pick up a bullhorn with the Rev Billy and tell the masses to “stop shopping”, and “back away from the Starbucks”, I don’t. I don’t shop and I am really super content. Really.

Because that was the next question from across the table, was I really happy or justifying it to myself that I am where I am (meaning poor instead of rich) so I have to defend it. So very strange, but maybe I am an oddity: I have been on food stamps, I have been rich, I have been poor, I have seen both sides of consumerism and found out what makes me truly exultant. Self-sustainability, gardening, foraging, feeding my family home cooked meals, being frugal and creatively finding a use for everything that we already have make me strangely the happiest person in 36 years.

Gandhi (my 3rd world compatriot) said:

Be the change that you want to see in the world.

This is my world. And this is the path that we are on: it’s absolutely beautiful, it’s incredibly inspiring, it’s manna milk and honey heaven on earth. And nope, I am not justifying it, and nope, I am not turning back, why would I? The road has just begun.

Experimental Thursday

Experimental Thursday

It's 2:32 AM PST.

I was about to go to sleep but then just realized I had to cut and sleeve the 120 roll that I was drying in the bathroom. I wanted to take a look at the actual shots, but I was just too lazy to fire up my scanner.

I turned on my tiny portable lightbox and looked at the negatives. Then I thought "What if I just take a shot of this with my iPhone, and send it to myself, then invert the shot to get positive picture??"

So that's precisely what I did. I'm not too much into experimental/lomogoraphy/alternative process type of stuff, but this was kinda fun and I somehow liked the result. So here it is. To obey my own rule, no cropping to the shot nor to the iPhone capture of the negative.

Living a life in mine

Living a life in mine

This has been a rather busy, rather fun week!

We've gotten into several performances of Chocolate Factory since Friday. Jes runs spotlight and so that means we've gotten to hang together during the week. She really enjoys the play and I'm glad for that! Cute Jes used to freak out at the thought of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. I think it was mostly because of the creepy Oompa-vibes she experienced. I, however, have always loved the story. When I was a kid, we'd fire up our BETA-MAX and My brother and I'd eat lot's of chocolate! Oh what great memories I have of the original movie. I loved the Gene Wilder in that fatherly, slightly sinister role.

All the same, I think Johhny Depp was tremendous in the role when the newer movie came out. I really appreciate his style of acting and I strive to work in the same way as him. He always keeps control over his character and he himself learned alot from Marlon Brando, which I think was just about the greatest actor in his younger years before too much pretentiousness literally grew him out of control. I don't think Depp has that problem at all even though he can really irk studios once and a while. That's just great! And he's just cool in general as well. Jes thinks he's nice, but hey I can't blame her!

In terms of my Wonka, I didn't really draw from either of the previous characters. I think of Wonka as a kind of mad scientist who's simply interested in his own world, until Charlie comes along. He sees true innocence in him and can understand him. He rather doesn't care at all for children who have greed or attitude, so I use that motivation in my work for this role. Also, since he's a bit mad, I think it's quite alright to throw split personalities into the mix. I think Wonka would feel free to be whoever he likes, since his inner world is just incredible and imaginative.

So there. That's what I think about that. I love acting and I thought you'd like to see how I'm getting into character. It's very important to me. It's a gift God placed into me and I want to use it as best I can! I've gotten requests to go back to LA, but we'll just have to see about that. Is that the only way I can do what I want? To act?

When I was out in Los Angeles, I actually got to meet Don Knotts. I was in a McDonalds in Beverly Hills of all places. I went to use the rest room and as I was coming out, there he was, just sitting and eating a McFish McSandwich. It didn't register for a moment as I walked past, and then, in a Don Knott's-like-fashion, I did an old-fashioned-double-take as I realized who this great old man was. DON freakin' Knotts! I was awe-struck. I - I ...I couldn't say anything to him. I just respected him so much. What I really wanted to do was go over there and kiss his forehead and gush about him and how much I loved Barney Fife and all of the other characters he played. At the time he had a lady-friend with him and I don't think it would've been a good idea for me to do so.

So I simply went out to my car and wrote a note. A note talking about those things. Talking about how much I appreciated how he never took a role that was in bad taste or out of his moral character. How I grew up with him, how I thought was a wonderful person he was. I folded it up and went back inside.

I didn't actually give it to him. At this point in time he was looking pretty frail and I didn't want to bother him. So I gave it to his friend silently and respectfully and without saying a word, smiled and left for the audition that eventually got me on a pilot for MTV. It has never aired. But what a life we lived!

There's a reason I recall this story. Mr. Don Knotts died at the age of (I believe) 81. He was a great man and an incredible character! He practically invented such great visial emotions in his time that had never been seen on screen. On his shoulders are those kings like Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, ect.; I am thankful he showed us his gift.

One day I hope to be up there, showing the promise of my potential. I surely hope he will enjoy watching me from up above it all now...
